Bot protection detects and responds to automated activity. The policy must distinguish an abusive process from authorized automation, such as search indexing or a partner integration. Evaluate the whole collection-to-enforcement path on the actual endpoints your users and systems call.
Inventory clients as well as endpoints
A public catalog, login form and machine-to-machine API have different expected traffic. Identify legitimate crawlers, mobile clients and accessibility needs before enforcing a challenge. A policy designed only around one desktop browser can break valid traffic elsewhere.
Inspect what the challenge establishes
An interactive challenge, proof of work and an environment check collect different evidence. Verify how the result is bound to the action, how the server validates it and how replay is handled. A completed challenge does not settle every account or transaction question.
Measure friction and prevented work
Count challenge presentations, completion, added latency and support recovery alongside blocked abusive requests. Include an observation-only phase when practical. Review false positives by client type so improvements on one traffic segment do not hide problems on another.
What to compare
- Allowed versus abusive clients
- Collection and enforcement placement
- Challenge validation and fallback
- Customer friction by client type

FAQ
Should a business block every bot?
No. Define which automated clients have permission and which actions they may take.
How does bot protection differ from fraud detection?
Bot protection focuses on automation and request behavior. Fraud workflows may also require identity, account, payment and outcome evidence.
